More About Malta
Malta is a microcosm of the Mediterranean. Few European countries have such concentrated history, architecture and, yes, beaches in so tiny an area.
There’s been an eclectic mix of influences and a roll-call of rulers over the centuries, but be in no doubt: Malta is not just a notional outpost of Italy or a relic of colonial Britain.
Although small, Malta has a vast and rich history, with evidence for habitation going back to the Neolithic era (4th millennium B.C.). The country boasts some of the world's most ancient standing buildings, the Neolithic temples, and its strategic location and good harbours in the middle of the Mediterannean have attracted Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans, Arabs, Normans, Crusaders, the French and finally the British, with the colonial period lasting until 1964.
Malta has a lot to offer, so whether its sea and sand, or history that you're after, you'll find it more than satisfies.

Malta has truly earned a reputation more as a great package holiday destination. The fantastic Mediterranean climate, considerable amounts of sunshine even during the winter months and the clear, warm sea are just some of the things that lend it to this market. There's an abundance of accommodation, especially in the resorts on the north-east coast, the majority of which is reasonably priced. Over the past years, the government has made attempts to attract a higher class of tourist and the construction of four and five star hotels reflects this, but there's still plenty of inexpensive fare to be had. Add to the great climate and abundance of accommodation the lovely beaches, dramatic coastal scenery and variety of watersports and leisure activities, and it becomes clear why Malta is so popular with the package holidaymaker.
Malta is by no means only a place for the beach lover however. In fact, stick only to the sea and sand and you'd miss out on Malta's true highlights. Its fascinating and ancient past is evident all around you the minute you step off the beaches. Man's comprehensive temple-building spree left the Ggantiji temples on Gozo, the oldest freestanding structures on earth and the labyrinthine Hypogeum containing 3600-year-old bones amongst others. A few days off the beaches will give you time to explore the bustling street of Valletta, the elegant walled capital Mdina, the many attractive stone-built towns and the wonderful villages that demonstrate the quieter side of Mediterranean life.
For as long as history has reported, the tiny nation of Malta has assumed an importance that far exceeds its small size. The archipelago, all 315km2 of it, is a mere speck in the southern Mediterranean and you could be forgiven for thinking it nothing more than a stepping stone between Europe and Northern Africa. But Malta has been home to some of the oldest man-made stone structures in the world, and the famous Knights of Malta settled here in the mid 1500s and left a considerable legacy. It's served as a watch keeper and guardian of the Mediterranean trade routes, has been a launch-pad for European invaders and an idyllic retreat for rich aristocracy. Its history is long and complicated and its geography unique, and together these have made it one of the most enticing islands in Europe.
There are frequent fast ferries to the Sicilian port of Catania (3 hours) and Pozzallo, Italy (90 minutes), but the seas can be turbulent with a heavy swell if it's windy. Usually the trip takes around twice as long on large passenger ships, but fares are lot cheaper, which makes it ideal for drivers of cars, trucks, or campers. Other destinations include Livorno, Salerno, Rome (Civitavecchia), Palermo, Genoa and Tunis. However, discount airlines like Ryanair, Windjet and Efly can be more convenient and the prices of their flights are often comparable to the cost of a boat trip.
