More About Craignure

Craignure lies close to Mull's easternmost point, and it is reasonably equidistant from the island's two main destinations: Tobermory to the north and Iona to the west.

It is the main terminus for the ferries from Oban. It is therefore a logical place for the main terminus for the ferries from Oban, and for many years that is exactly what it has been.

The village, whose name means 'rock of the Yew Tree', was brought to life by the coming of the ferry service in 1964, when the modern pier was built. The original pier, built in 1894, can still be seen near the village hall.

But before you simply disembark from the ferry and head, as fast as Mull's mainly single track roads will allow, for either of those destinations, it is worth remembering that this small corner of Mull offers visitors a great deal to see and do without straying very far at all. This shouldn't be too much of a surprise as you will very probably have seen one of the area's attractions while still on the ferry, and many well have caught glimpses of others.

Craignure Ferry Terminal

Craignure is the main ferry terminal for the Isle of Mull. Caledonian Mac Brayne Ferries run every two hours between Craignure and Oban. Buses run from Craignure to Tobermory in the north of Mull right down to Fionnphort in the south.

Craignure itself is fairly thinly scattered around the shores of Craignure Bay. The focus for visitors tends to be on the west side of the bay at the end of the ferry pier built in 1964 and now used by the Oban Ferry, the MV Isle of Mull. Here you find one of the island's two Tourist Information Centres, combined with the ferry booking office; plus a number of shops, and Craignure's rather inadequate public loos.

The original pier, built in 1894, projects from the south side of the bay. Nearby you find much of the rest of the village, including Torosay Church, the garage and the police station; plus the campsite, the village hall and Craignure's station on the Isle of Mull Railway

Neatly between these two main chunks of village lies the Craignure Inn, set just to the west of the main road. With a charming atmosphere that comes from having been an inn since at least the early 1700s, the Craignure Inn serves some of the best, and certainly best value, food you are likely to find on Mull. and it also provides accommodation.

On the journey over from Oban, the first landmark of Mull that comes into view is Duart Castle - ancient seat of the Clan MacLean. Once you've disembarked at Craignure, it's a short drive to the castle - bus tours are available if you don't have transport.

Another popular visitor attraction in this area is Torosay Castle, a victorian house with beautiful gardens and interiors. A novel way to travel to Torosay is on the Mull railway, a narrow gauge track that runs from Craignure to the castle.
