More About the Cyclade Islands

The Cyclades are a group of Greek Islands, located in the southern part of the Aegean Sea (south of Athens and north of Crete). The archipelago contains some 2,200 islands, islets and rocks; just 33 islands are inhabited. The Cyclades are best known for the islands of Santorini and Mykonos.

From the Greek mainland ferries and highspeed catamaran services run daily from Piraeus, Rafina and Lavrio. Ferrys operate to all the islands in the Cyclades, some of the larger islands also have a highspeed catamaran service.

Ferry trips are four to five hours to the closest islands (Kythnos, Syros, Tinos, Mykonos and Sifnos) and from eight to ten hours to the furthest (Santorini) depending on the number of stops. The highspeeds take half the time but cost twice as much.

There are daily ferries from Pireaus to all of these islands, with the exception of Kea and Kythnos which you get to from Lavrio and Andros which you get to from Rafina.

Cyclades Island Ferry Port

Many travelers probably consider Rafina not a possible departure port if they are heading to one of the Cyclades, but if you are arriving at the airport of Athens, you are often better off taking a ferry from Rafina than traveling to Athens and get a ferry from Piraeus.

Many boat services stop working by end of October and resume by April. Check with the operator or use the live ferry price and route check facility above before making departure plans. All the services are also subject to delays and cancellations in adverse weather.

There are two fast car ferries (Nissos Mykonos and Nissos Rodos) in addition to the high speed catamarans Highspeed 1, Highspeed 4, Highspeed 5, Highspeed 6, Flyingcat 3 and Flyingcat 4 with the remiander of the ferry routes being operated by conventional cruise ferries.

The main Greek Islands tourist destinations in the Cyclades and their primary attractions are:-

  • Amorgos — has a famous monastery and just a few beaches
  • Anafi — a small unspoiled island located east of Santorini
  • Antiparos — a small island just west of Paros, relaxed and with nice beaches
  • Andros — the second largest and most northerly island, traditional and tranquil, green and mountainous, with many beaches
  • Delos — a small uninhabited island close to Mykonos, famous for its archaeological sites.
  • Folegandros — a beautiful, quiet island to the west of Santorini
  • Ios — famous as a young people's party island
  • Kea — a quiet island popular mostly with vacationing Greeks, close to Athens but it feels remote
  • Kimolos — small satellite island of Milos
  • Little Cyclades — a group of small islands southeast of Naxos, including Ano Koufonisi, Kato Koufonisi, Iraklia, Schinousa and Donousa
  • Milos — the least touristed of the larger Cyclades, volcanic with spectacular rock formations
  • Mykonos — a popular tourist destination, with excellent beaches and the most vibrant night life
  • Naxos — the largest and greenest island in the group, with excellent beaches
  • Paros — a popular tourist island with attractive landscape and good beaches
  • Santorini — a spectacular volcanic island, one of the most beautiful and romantic places in the world, with amazing landscape, unusual beaches and a vibrant night life
  • Serifos — a small, quiet island with great beaches, traditional town
  • Sifnos — a picturesque, quiet traditional island, with good beaches and walks
  • Sikinos — a small rocky island with a few beaches and good walks
  • Syros — a traditional island with Italianate architecture, large main town, good beaches
  • Thirassia — a small satellite island of Santorini, with which it formed the same island until the huge volcanic eruption of 2nd millenium BCE
  • Tinos — a traditional island, cathedral is major pilgrimage site, good beaches

The traditional architecture of the villages of the group of islands of Cyclades are world known and are composing a cliche of Greece: small white cubic houses with blue doors and windows and bougainvillea pedestrians alleys.

Greece is also world known for its active nightlife and the Greek Islands Cyclades have the most lively nightlife in Greece. There is a large choice of bars and night clubs and some areas have been turned exlusively in party islands. If you are looking for a quite family holiday you are advised to do some homework before you choose your destination.

Cyclade Islands

The Greek Islands of Cyclades are so named from a loose circle ("kyklos" in Greek), roughly centered on the sacred island of Delos.

For many people, Greek island is simply a cycladic island with cubic whitewashed houses, a maze of tiny streets, small churches and chapels at every corner, crystal clear sea. Visitors to the Cyclades who expect this are never disapointed.

The Cyclades islands, Greece are composed of 39 islands of which 24 are inhabited. The Cyclades are the most famous of all Greek islands with Amorgos, Anafi, Andros, Antiparos, Delos, Ios, Kea, Kimolos, Folegandros, Milos, Mykonos, Naxos, Paros, Santorini, Serifos, Sikinos, Sifnos, Syros and Tinos.

Each island has to offer something different and each one has its own character, style, lifestyle, traditions and customs. Travel here, where one can find vivid cosmopolitan nightlife and at the same time tranquility and peace.

Ferry connections are excellent in Cyclades, especially in high summer. Piraeus, Rafina and Lavrio ports connect Cyclades Islands with mainland Greece.

Regular scheduled Cyclade Island ferry sailings are operated by ANEK Line, Blue Star Ferries, Aegean Speed Lines, Agoudimos Ferry Line, Cyclades Fast Ferries and Sea Jets ferries.
